Matthew Schutte

Co-Founder, Unyt Accounting, Powered by Holochain

Matthew is a pioneering technologist with a deep commitment to enabling communities to manage and share essential resources. As the co-founder of Holochain, he has nourished an open source, decentralized application framework that gives each user control over their data and applications—laying the groundwork for opt-in systems of coordination where resource distribution is equitable and dynamically evolvable. Holochain is not a blockchain and makes use of an elegant design that enables communities to steward themselves without having to rely upon token-based validation incentives.

His leadership in launching both Holo, a decentralized cloud hosting marketplace, and Unyt, a platform for mutual credit accounting that fosters flows of economic activity within communities, demonstrate a commitment to using decentralized technology to build practical solutions that solve real world coordination problems.

On the Board of Directors at Toward Warm Data, Matthew supports explorations of the complex interdependencies that sustain vibrant, resilient communities. This is both study and practice, rooted in the organizing principles of living systems.

His multidisciplinary background—from graduating at Berkeley Law School to managing an angel investment firm, designing digital identity infrastructures, and fostering organizational cultures of innovation while helping manage a makerspace called TechShop—provides him with a unique perspective on the systemic challenges and opportunities involved in rethinking resource flows and both the possibilities and the challenges presenting themselves in the coming decade.
